How to Fix - Index page duplicates?

Index page duplicates

Hi,

I am not too familiar with building Indexes, so I'm hoping someone can guide me on this one...

I received a document from a user who has created an Index for a manuscript.
The problem is that some page references are duplicating within the same index entry.
For example, here is the way one entry appears:

Hertzog, J.
B.
M., 44, 57, 162, 240, 177, 240, 244,
See also Afrikaners

Note the double occurrence of page 240 - and how page 177 comes after one of the references...

Here is another one:

literacy test, 24, 36, 39, 43, 95, 338–44, 338–44, 338–44, 124, 128, 338–44, 338–44, 315, 317, 338–44, 321, 324, 338–44, 349

Note that the same page ranges display seven times within this entry, and that the pages are not in numerical order.

I'm not sure where to begin looking for a solution on this one.
Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated.
Please ask me any questions.
We have recently switched over to Word 2013, but these entries were originally created in Word 2010.

I don't think this is the answer.
Word ordinarily does not duplicate entries.
Even if you have three XE fields for the same term on the same page, it will list the entry only once.
Moreover, if you have duplicate page numbers in more than one section, Word
will use only one of them, so if you have the same word referenced on page iv and page 4, you'll get only the first (listed as 4).
At least this is the case in Word 2003, and I don't think it has changed in Word 2010.

What's more likely is that the document has become damaged in some way.
Indexes can be very fragile and very frustrating.
When I experienced such difficulties, I ended up just locking the INDEX field and editing the index manually (which I wanted to do anyway
for other reasons).

Tweak IE Options

Open Internet Explorer.
Go to "Tools > Internet Options > Advanced Tab".
Uncheck "Enable third-party browser extensions".
Click "Apply".
Reboot your computer.
