doubleclicking an individual excel 2010 file won't open it, can only open from the dropdown menu when excel itself is open
I am having a problem opening Excel 2010 (xlsx) files, operating system is Windows 7.
Excel will open files fine when already in Excel and using their open feature.
However, if I am not in Excel and just in a folder on my computer and I try
to open an Excel file, I get an error message saying the file is not a valid win32 application.
If I go back to the file and choose "open with" the option given is "Microsoft Office 2010 Component" which gives me that error message.
When I try to associate
this file type with the Excel application from my program files it still chooses the Excel Component and still does not work.
I have tried associating .xlsx files with excel in the default program section of the control panel, but it still chooses excel component
instead of the excel application.
This is becoming quite irritating and if anyone could give me some help I would really appreciate it.

Hi, I had a similar problem after installing office pro2010 running windows 7 on a Dell Vostro laptop.
The solution was:
Start
all programs
Microsoft office (this gives the list of office applications)
Right click on excel
select 'properties'
select the compatibility tab
uncheck the ' Run this program in compatibility for:' 'windows XP service pack 3'
My excel files now open fine.
Hope this helps someone.
