Can Not Open doc files in email attachments

When I try to open a doc file in an email attachment I get an error message from adobe reader that the file can not be opened.
I can save the file and open it that way.
I just bought this computer a few weeks ago and I've never been able to open doe files
even after installing Microsoft Home and Student.
I can open excel files and pdf files.

This sounds like a file type association problem.
Associating .doc files with Winword should resolve the problem.
This can be done using the Default Programs tool in Windows Vista.
