[Solved] After awakening from sleep and hung on an manual update to Avast, Task Manager and Resource Monitor(RM) disk activity is at 100%, CPU is at 1 or 2% & memory at about 12%.

After awakening from sleep and hung on an manual update to Avast, Task Manager and Resource Monitor(RM) disk activity is at 100%, CPU is at 1 or 2% & memory at about 12%.

Original title: I am getting 100% HDD activity
Hi, problems started a few days ago and have tried all to correct.  PC slowed to a crawl after awakening it from sleep, then it hung on an manual update to Avast.
I did a restart, which required a "force shutdown" from prompt.

On the restart, and every subsequent start, it takes about 20 minutes just to right mouse click on the desktop and see the wait thing????? All the while HDD led is solid, and when I can finally get into TM and Resource Monitor(RM) disk activity is at 100%.
CPU is at 1 or 2%, memory at about 12%.

Eventually the HDD settles and I can access internet, but not without "IE is not responding", as well I can access event viewer and such, all which take some time to fully open and show the info.

The HDD often spikes to the 100% and if I have the RM open, SYSTEM, svchost (dcom and or localservice...), perfmon, and taskhost seem to spike, and then disk falls off to 0%  activity.

It is during these spikes, nothing works, even to the point that if I were to be typing this message, the letters typed would not appear.
Without the spikes usage is limited, and extremely long load times.
For example, I suspected a HDD problem and after
trying other apps to verify, I re-ran windows experience index.
The cpu, memory and graphics portions ran what I recalled to be at a normal time, but the Disk portion took 18 minutes, the monitor is set to turn off in 10, and it did.
The rating came as it
had been, 5.9.
I am hopeing someone can tell me how exactly to determine if read/write speeds are messed up, or it is not running at it's speed, 7200rpm, what app can be used?

To further, on every shut down or restart, I get the prompt that taskhost is shutting down background tasks or similar.

I have run sfc \scannow verifyonly, in win\system32 - no problems, restored to earlier date - 3 hours - no change, installed and used Process Explorer, tdsskiller, Malwarebytes and did complete scan with Avast.
NOTE: tdsskiller and Avast did each findcone
"low threats" which were quarantined.
Ran ANALYZE on defragmenter and showed 10% fragmentation on 162Gb used of 1Tb.

My start-up file has only 6 items, as it always has, I have tried diagnostic start up from both Safe mode and windows.
As well, I have swapped HDD cable, port and controller ( mobo has Intel and Marvell) as well as used other HDD (loaded with Win 7 64 Home
Prem..) on the same cables ect., all is well.

Sorry for the length of this, and I have omitted and forgot much, but I am lost, and baffled.  Any help is HIGHLY appreciated.
Thank-you, Todd
