Troubleshoot:2 failed updates: KB970892 error code FF, KB978338 error code 800B0100 Error

2 failed updates: KB970892 error code FF, KB978338 error code 800B0100

Hi there - I've re-posted my original question from the Windows Vista forum.
Need a bit of additonal help please.

Michael Murphy suggested I try:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/956702
Error message when you try to use the Windows Update or Microsoft Update Web sites to install updates: "0x800B0100"
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/default.aspx
Put the KB numbers in the search at above link > manually download them.

Sorry for sounding stupid here - I've located the files, but I'm unsure which update to download:
For KB970892, I've located
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=0d878f4b-71e8-4170-9a14-1bce684811ce
On the 'Files to download' I have 3 options:
SQLServer2005-KB970892-IA64-ENU.exe 36.8 MB
SQLServer2005-KB970892-x64-ENU.exe 24.2 MB
SQLServer2005-KB970892-x86-ENU.exe 18.8 MB

I didn't want to download the incorrect file in case I damaged my system.
Which of the above would I download, based on my system set-up below?

For KB978338, I've located
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=196055a6-15d1-4da8-b33d-501e69bf5176
When I click to download directly using the link above, the installation window opens,
it completes the initialisation, but then fails after about a minute with the error code: 800B0100.

Any help is greatly appreciated!
Thanks very much.

Here is my original question/situation, posted yesterday 28/07/10:

Windows Vista Home Premium
Version 6.0 (Build 6002: Service pack 2)
System
Manufacturer: HP
Model: HP G5000
RAM: 1.00 GB
Operating system: 32 bit

Cannot install 2 windows updates:
KB970892
Security update for SQL Server 2005 Service pack 3
Installation status: Failed
error code FF
Last attempted: 28/07/10 @ 20:46 Failed
First attempt:  17/10/09 @ 08:18 Failed

KB978338
Security update for Windows Vista
Installation status: Failed
error code 800B0100
Last attempted: 28/07/10 @ 20:42 Failed
First attempt: 14/04/10 @ 20:26 Failed

Worth pointing out that there have been other successful updates,
under the same title, with different codes during the same time period:
Security update for Windows Vista:
KB980218 11/06/10 Successfull
KB979559 11/06/10 Successfull
KB979482 11/06/10 Successfull
KB980232 17/04/10 Successfull
KB981332 15/04/10 Successfull
KB979309 15/04/10 Successfull
KB978601 15/04/10 Successfull
KB979683 15/04/10 Successfull
KB978542 14/05/10 Successfull

System runs updates daily and regularly tried to install the 2 updates above>
I have also attempted the download from the Windows update icon on toolbar.
Have also attempted by clicking the shutdown button from start menu (as updates are available)
These are also unsuccessfull.
After clicking to download updates from Windows updates, I go onto the Windows update screen
Preparing to install
Creating a restore point
Installing update 1 of 1,
Security Update for SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 3 (KB970892)
Then within 3 minutes:
"Hotfix Installer stopped working and was closed
A problem caused the application to stop working correctly.
Windows will notify you if a solution is available."

Antivirus / Firewall: Norton 360
I checked with Norton as I suspected that it may be blocking Hotfix from
downloading/installing the update.
They advised me that it wasn't, that it was
a Microsoft error and that I should contact Microsoft.

Can anyone help please?  Going out my mind with this one.

Download Error Fixer (Free)

Norton (and McAfee) applications are notorious for not upgrading (or uninstalling) cleanly.
The "leftovers" may be causing your problem.

1.
Download the Norton Removal Tool, saving it to your desktop:
ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/removal_tools/Norton_Removal_Tool.exe
2.
Close any open applications (i.e., anything with an icon on the taskbar).
3.
After making certain you have a copy of your Product Key handy, uninstall all Norton software (includingLiveUpdate and any
Norton Add-ons) via Control Panel | Programs | Uninstall a program (or
Control Panel | Programs and Features, if using Classic view).
4.
IMPORTANT! => Enable the Windows Firewall immediately after rebooting.

NB: You're "working without a net" now: Don't to ANYTHING else online (e.g., browsing; reading email; chatting) until you've completed Step #7 below!
5.
Right-click on the file you saved in Step #1 above and select Run as Administrator.  Don't TOUCH your keyboard until the run completes, then reboot.
6. Do a clean install of Norton 360 2010 using your Product ID & reboot:http://www.symantec.com/norton/support/kb/web_view.jsp?wv_type=public_web&docurl=20080514162318EN

TIP: Do not enable or install any Norton Add-ons (e.g., Norton Anti-Phishing) just yet.

7.
Manually and repeatedly run (Norton) LiveUpdate until you get a "no more updates" prompt.
8a. Open IE (only) to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923737 and run the Fix It.
[Trust me]
8b.
Open IE (only) to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058 and run the Fix It in DEFUALT and then AGGRESSIVE modes.
9.
Reboot & test.
