Advice, please: OEM replaced a defective 64-bit machine with one that has a 32 bit version of Windows 7. Object to this?
My 64-bit Windows 7 Home Premium machine was only 4 months old when it had motherboard "issues" and was replaced under warranty by the OEM.
I was assured that everything would be the same as the original machine but when I received it today, I noticed that
the operating system is different--Windows Professional 32-bit instead of Home Premium 64 bit.
Should I squawk about the 32-64 bit difference? I have heard and read that the 64 bit system handles data in memory more efficiently, and that it can handle having
more programs open at a time; which is why I ordered the system that way originally.
I never had trouble with drivers, etc.
This is a standalone home office machine (no network) that isn't used for games/high-end graphics, etc.
What do y'all think of the difference
in running 32 bit vs.
64 bit, and do you have an opinion as to whether I should object to the change in the operating system that was shipped to me? Thanks for the input.
The system has 4 GB of RAM
Solutions to the Problem Advice, please: OEM replaced a defective 64-bit machine with one that has a 32 bit version of Windows 7. Object to this?
The biggest factor is if you plan on adding more RAM.
If you keep 32 bit you will not be able to use any more RAM because 4GB is the most it can see.
With 64 bit you can use over 4GB of RAM.
If you're using many programs at the same time you may want 64 bit so you can expand your available RAM in the future.
Don't Download Malware
Where are you getting the download?
There are malicious people who download valid copies of a popular download, modify the file with malicious software, and then upload the file with the same name. Make sure you are downloading from the developer's web page or a reputable company.
Cancel or deny any automatic download
Some sites may automatically try start a download or give the appearance that something needs to be installed or updated before the site or video can be seen. Never accept or install anything from any site unless you know what is downloading.
Avoid advertisements on download pages
To help make money and pay for the bandwidth costs of supplying free the software, the final download page may have ads. Watch out for anything that looks like advertisements on the download page. Many advertisers try to trick viewers into clicking an ad with phrases like "Download Now", "Start Download", or "Continue" and that ad may open a separate download.
